JMEC Chair holds consultative meeting with UN Chief, AUC Chair, IGAD in Addis

The Chairperson of the Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission H.E. Festus Mogae has on Saturday held a consultative meeting and briefed  leaders from IGAD, United Nation and African Union leaders in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa.

In attendance were the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Moussa Faki, Secretary-General of the United Nations, H.E. António Guterres, IGAD Chairperson who is also the Prime Minister of Ethiopia, H.E. Hailemariam Desalegn, IGAD Special Envoy to South Sudan, Amb. Isamil Wais among other leaders.

In his remarks, H.E. Mogae touched on the IGAD-led Cessation of Hostilities and the High Level Revitalization Forum saying “a platform for inclusive, political dialogue has been established through which the challenges that confront us (in South Sudan) can be addressed and resolved”

He reiterated his call for clear consequences for ceasefire violators and his One Voice message among regional states “to bring about the change we desire”

“We must stand together, unified in our approach, if we are going to help the South Sudanese leaders to find and sustain the spirit of compromise and engagement that will deliver peace,” he said.

“The resolute unity and determination of IGAD, the AU and the UN, with the full support of the wider international community, will be necessary to bring about the change we desire.”
