The Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (JMEC) has on Sunday held a meeting with a delegation from the African Union Peace and Security Council.

The team led by Ambassador Bankole Adeoye, the Permanent Representative of Nigeria to the African Union and Chairperson of the Peace and Security Council for this month, are on a five-day visit to South Sudan to take stock of the outcome of the two phases of the IGAD-led High Level Revitalisation Forum held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in December 2017 and February 2018, according to a statement from the team.

JMEC Chief of Staff, Ambasador Berhanu Kebede and his team gave an overview of the Commission’s engagement in the High Level Revitalization Forum and regional efforts being made towards bringing warring parties together to find an amicable peace and security in South Sudan.

The briefing also included thematic updates by the Commission’s team of advisors on the progress made and challenges encountered in the implementation of various Chapters of the Peace Agreement.

According to a statement from the team, the PSC delegation is expected to interact with all South Sudanese stakeholders, as well as with African and international actors, to assess the challenges in the implementation of the 2015 Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic South Sudan.

The visit of the delegation is also meant to demonstrate solidarity and total support of the African Union towards finding lasting peace in South Sudan, the statement said.
